February Fun!

February has been a pretty exciting month! We found out that Jason was offered the internship this summer in Denver, CO with Towers Watson. After a few more interviews with other companies and a lot of prayer, he officially accepted the offer and starts the beginning of May. We are still working out the details. Since Jason is usually in survival mode with school, he doesn't think about it that much yet. I try not to think about it either because I don't like thinking about him being gone. :)

Another piece of news that not many people know is that we're expecting a baby August 17th! Fortunately, Towers Watson allowed Jason to shorten the original time of the internship so he could come home a week before the baby is due. We're both excited for this news, although the last few months have been difficult since we've lost pregnancies in the past. It's hard not to worry or be anxious even now that I'm into the second trimester. We're grateful for the many prayers for us from family and friends. Especially sweet are the prayers that my little nieces and nephews offer for me and the baby. Their faith is amazing and their persistence appreciated!

Speaking of babies, my sister Kristilyn gave birth to her 5th child at the end of February. They named him John Alfred Eliason. He came a week early. The crazy thing about it is that their family moved 3 days after he was born. I was more than happy to hold the baby while Jason helped moved the boxes and furniture. :)

We celebrated Jason's birthday by going out to dinner and to a BYU basketball game. We also went to a men's volleyball game a couple weeks later. We got to sit on the front row for both of them. It's amazing how much more exciting the games can be the closer you are to the action.

This month we also decided to try out a month pass at Orem Fitness Center. We have really enjoyed it and will probably do it another month until the weather warms up a little more. One fun sport that we've enjoyed is Pickleball. It's kind of like tennis on a smaller court with a paddle that is twice as big as a Ping Pong paddle and a wiffle ball. I like it because the wiffle ball can't go as fast as a tennis ball or racquetball, so it's easier to get pretty good at it in a short time. We've played doubles with other couples a few times and it's a lot of fun.

A few other highlights from the month include family dinners with both sides of the family, an eagle scout Valentine's Day fundraiser dinner, as well as a Ward potluck dinner. Jason has also been playing in weekly ward basketball games, which he really enjoys. We attended a BYU Music Dance Theater (MDT) performance of various broadway songs, as well as a BYU ballroom dance performance in Salt Lake with Kristilyn while my parents were in Idaho helping out my sister Katrina. So, as you can see, it's been a busy month!

One other big event for February was the combined YW/YM activity that I was in charge of. The theme for the month was the Plan of Salvation so we organized a trip to a local Family History Training Center and learned how to index names. The activity was well attended, and even though 15 of the youth already knew how to index, more than half of them had never done a batch on their own. Most people had their own computers and there were lots of missionaries nearby to help answer questions. It turned out to be a really fun night.

These energizer bunny flowers lasted over three weeks. Jason bought them for my birthday and they lasted almost a week past Valentine's Day!

A New Year for Adventure!

January has turned out to be a good month for us even though we've also had a few trial thrown in the mix.

Probably some of the most exciting news is that Jason passed his first actuarial exam a couple of weeks ago. This was a huge deal for us. He has spent the last 18 months taking classes to prepare him for this test. It is such a difficult test that many math and statistics majors don't pass it the first time they take it. Jason had been taking many practice exams and he kept coming in right at on the passing line. We knew it could easily go either way, but Jason put in the necessary time to prepare and we had a lot of people praying for us. It was a 3 hr. test and he found out if he passed right after he finished. The last hour before he called me seemed very long!! We were both so relieved and happy and grateful that he passed so that he could focus on preparing for the next exam. What a huge blessing! He is know qualified to potentially accept an internship in Denver. He's competing with two other boys from his BYU class. Only one of the two boys passed, so Jason has a 50/50 chance of getting the internship. If he doesn't get this internship, we know something else will work out, so we aren't too concerned about it.

Other exciting news this month is that Jason's sister Chelsey married Mike Bogenrief. All of Jason's family flew or drove down for the occasion. We had a very nice wedding dinner the night before at a Stake Center in Sandy and had a chance to meet all of Mike's family. Saturday was the big day. They got married in the evening and Chelsey looked beautiful in her dress. They had a nice reception in Draper complete with an ice swan, chocolate fountain, and a dance party. The Burninghams love to dance, and everyone joined in. It was a very fun evening.

Jason and I also spent time with Jason's family on Sunday and Monday. We hung out in Provo on Sunday to talk and play games. Monday Jason went sledding before he went with Steve to pick up and deliver a mattress set to Chelsey and Mike as a wedding gift. While they were driving down the freeway, the box springs flew out of the trailor and was smashed as it hit the freeway. Fortunately no one was hurt, but after another mishap they were able to return it to Costco and exchange it for a new one, before tying the mattresses down and delivering them safely to Chels and Mike. It sounds like it was quite the adventure!

Later that afternoon we went to The Village, a BYU singles' complex that Jeff's company owns. We were able to have our own private pool party for a couple of hours and then eat at the Awful Waffle where they have the most delicious pizza, fries, belgium waffles, and crepes. Afterward's we went back to Jeff's house for a great FHE.

This month has also been busy with church activities. I was in charge of New Beginnings and that has been very time consuming. Fortunately I had a lot of help from the Presidency, beehive advisors, and the girls so that we pulled off a lovely night for the girls and their parents. We themed it around "hearts knit in love" and had fun invitations and programs that went along with the theme. The girls put on 8 shorts skits, one for each value, and the Bishop gave some really thoughtful comments at the end. We ate some yummy heart-shaped sugar cookies for our dessert. I'm so glad the activity turned out well!

And of course we can't forget my birthday. :) In spite of a sore throat, it still turned out to be a good day. Jason and I celebrated at Los Hermanos for dinner. It was delicious!! Los Hermanos is my favorite Mexican restaurant. I always order the green burrito with shredded pork, refried beans, and rice; their salsa is so tasty; and they give you fried ice cream on your birthday. So fun! Jason's mom and my friend Sara came over to visit that evening. I got plenty of cards, emails, texts, and phone calls wishing me a happy birthday. I'm grateful for so many kind friends and family members.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I can’t believe December has come and gone so quickly. Fortunately Jason and I were able to do many fun things during the month. Here are just a few:

·      We started off the month by going to the baby blessing of the Simmons family, friends of ours from our last ward. They adopted a baby girl in November and we were able to attend the sealing and blessing of baby Faith.

·      Jason has had several beginning and intermediate level interviews for various jobs. One of the most exciting was for a summer internship in Colorado just before Christmas. Since the company paid for his flight out there, I decided to tag along so we could spend the weekend with Mike and Desi and their family.  It was so fun to visit them and to meet their new addition, 2 mo. old Ivy Elizabeth.  She only weighed about 7 lbs. and was so fun to hold. I held her every chance I got! Jason felt pretty good about his interview, but he won’t find out more until after he takes his first actuarial exam the middle of January.

·      We flew back to Salt Lake on Christmas Eve and enjoyed participating in the annual nativity re-enactment at my parent’s house. It just gets better every year! We spent Christmas day visiting with lots of family including the Eliasons, Grandpa and Grandma Richards, my parents, the Riverton Rogers, Uncle George and Bill, and Jason’s parents. We totally enjoyed the food and the company!

·      The end of December marked the 10^th anniversary of when I received my endowments in the Mt. Timpanogos Temple. Jason and I celebrated by doing a session that night with Jason’s parents. We were even chosen to be the witness couple which made it even more special.

·      New Year’s Eve we celebrated with Jason’s parents and enjoyed a night of dinner and games with Chels and Mike. We are getting excited for their upcoming wedding!

Jason and I are very grateful for the many blessings we’ve received in 2012. We’re grateful to have family so close and grateful for gospel of Jesus Christ. Our adventure continues and we are looking forward to finding out where the next year will take us!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Well, here it is the end of November and another month has flown by. Jason and I enjoyed a great Thanksgiving feast with the Burningham family this year. Jeff and Sally were gracious enough to host it in their home. We had 10 adults and 7 energetic kids. It was also James' 2nd birthday so it kind of doubled as a birthday party complete with gifts. We ate around 2:00pm and it was one of the most delicious Thanksgiving meals I can remember! I ate some of everything and it was all amazing. We enjoyed hanging out, talking, and playing games like Word on the Street, Ticket to Ride, and Bananagrams. I brought an apple and pumpkin pie that I made completely from scratch. It was my first experience making pie crust or the pie filling, but fortunately they both turned out deliciously. See the pictures below for a mouth-watering experience. :) We also had fun hanging out with Steve and Kirsten who were down visiting from Idaho as well as meeting 3 mo. old Ezra for the first time.

Thanksgiving weekend was also spent getting out the Christmas decorations. A few years back we received a free pre-lit Christmas tree in good shape minus a couple strings of lights being out. We figured that was good enough and have been enjoying it ever since. Unfortunately, this year when we pulled it out, most of the strands of lights had stopped working. We still really like the tree so we both spent a few hours stripping the branches of these invisible, yet annoying, green clips that held the broken lights to the branches. We bought some more lights and whaaaalla, the tree looks amazing again! :)

Another notable event of the month would be the 2012 Presidential election between Barak Obama and Mitt Romney. Both Jason and I voted as I'm sure many of you did, unfortunately unlike Utah, the swing states could not see that Romney was the clear choice of who should be leading the country. It was disappointing to say the least. Hopefully the spotlight on Mormons has sparked an increase in missionary work, which would definitely be the blessing out of the whole situation.

On a more positive note, I will report a random act of kindness someone made in my behalf. A couple weeks ago, a new friend in the ward called me at work and left me a message saying that as she was making dinner, and she thought we would really like this easy recipe so she made some for us as well so we could try it out. Isn't that thoughtful? I want to be more thoughtful like that. It totally made my day and I didn't have to worry about what to eat when I got home from work.

I decided I had better write tonight so I could get a post in for October. I haven't written for a while, but since school started back up for Jason, we haven't been doing anything too terribly exciting.

The last couple of months have been spent mostly working (for me) and doing school work (for Jason). Jason is taking a prep class for the first actuarial exam that he will take the beginning of January. It's a difficult test and he still has a ways to go to be ready for it, but he has come a long way in the last year and a half. Jason has spent quite a bit of time looking into internship and job opportunities for the summer. He's had a few screening interviews and they've gone well, so we're keeping our fingers crossed that something will work out. The interesting part about that is that any job he gets will most likely be out of state and probably won't have insurance benefits. If that's the case, it's possible that I could just stay here through the summer and continue to work at my job. Neither of us like this option, but it is a possibility.

Besides work, I've been spending a lot of time with the Young Women. A couple months ago I was released from being a Primary teacher and moved to the Young Women's Presidency. I work with the 12- and 13-year-olds. I haven't been in YW since I was a young women and that feels like a really long time ago. I still can't say the revised YW theme without messing up and it's been kind of tricky to get the hang of the newer Personal Progress program. I am very excited about the new curriculum for next year though. We have about 11 girls at our activities and that number will only grow next year with many more girls coming in. I do have two advisors that work with my class and they are very helpful. To be honest, it's kind of been stressful that last couple weeks with some serious drama going on. The drama has involved several girls, moms, leaders, and the Bishop. The YW President and I are very ready to be done with it and hope that things settle down soon.

For fun Jason and I have been playing ultimate Frisbee Thursday nights at a local park and watching most of the BYU football games. I also started attending Zumba classes through BYU again, which I love. Melody and Brandon were up this last weekend and we had fun going out to dinner and catching up with them Friday night. Mike and Desi also just had their fourth baby last week. I just wish they lived a lot closer so we could go visit them! Ivy came 3 weeks early but fortunately everything seems to be fine with Desi and the baby.

Jason and I aren't big into Halloween. Neither of us dressed up, but we did get quite a few trick-or-treaters tonight--more than anticipated. We ran out of candy after an hour and a half and had to turn off our lights and hide in our bedroom for the rest of the night. Fun times. :)

Jason ran a 5K Conference weekend at Wheeler Farm to benefit the Council for Exceptional Children. He came in 6th place in just under 19 minutes. It's hard for me to believe that without any training, Jason can run 6 min. miles!

Labor Day Weekend

It's always nice to have a day off of work, and it's a bonus if it happens to be a Monday. I've come to appreciate Monday holidays more and more.

Saturday Jason and I hiked part way up the Mt. Timpanogos Trail to see a couple of waterfalls. It was a beautiful day to hike and there weren't many people on the trail since it was threatening to rain. In fact it didn't rain until we were a 1/4 of a mile from our car, and then it poured rain for several minutes. Even though we tried to run to our car, we were both soaked by the time we got there.

Monday we had my family over for Labor Day. Since we couldn't all fit in our small apartment, we organized some family Olympic events in the backyard...complete with a picnic. Afterwards we went to Bridal Veil Falls, which was more busy than I've ever seen it before. The water was really cold, but somehow the kids didn't mind.

The Fun Continues

The last half of August proved to be as fun as the first. Here are some pictures from our adventures.

Jason and I ran in our Ward Fun Run on Aug. 18th. We both took first place in our age category which was ages 19-39. Jason actually deserved his title after beating a high school cross country track member by a good 20-30 seconds. I, on the other hand, can only attribute mine to luck. 

As a late anniversary celebration, Jason and I went to the Olympic Park in Park City and went on the High Adventure Ropes Course and the Extreme Zipline. We had fun and enjoyed some great weather and scenery. You can see in some pictures below that the leaves are already starting to change colors. I would have gotten pictures of the zipline, but we both went down at the same time.

We also went to Donut Falls with some friends of ours from the Sandy ward where we used to live. It was fun to hang out with them again. I think you can tell from the pictures who was their favorite. :)

This week after work I also took advantage of the $2 Tuesdays at Thanksgiving Point and went walking with my high school friend Marilee Bass Garner. We had a great time and the gardens were gorgeous! They are putting in a new exhibit with statues of Christ that will be amazing when it is done.
